Reuben Watts was born in Manchester England on 29 May 1869 where he trained as a jeweller in the Arts and Crafts style. After the death of his wife he decided to visit New Zealand, arriving in Wellington in 1899. He worked for the commercial jewellers Littlejohn and exhibited with NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington 1900–10. before moving to Auckland in 1906 where he worked for A. Kohn. Watts went on to became an independent jeweller exhibiting at the Auckland Arts and Crafts Club in 1912. Watts became known for his fine metal work and and between 1930 and 1939 he taught at Elam School of Art. He was musical, played the 'cello in an amateur trio and went on painting excursions with friend Arthur Heap. He painted watercolours but in later life painted in oils.
