A good original 19th century Japanese Kaidan Tansu step chest, Meiji period, of cypress and cedar construction with a combination of five doors and six drawers all in keyaki wood, the eight Japanese red pine steps displaying gold old wear. Provenance: Purchased in Japan some 20 years ago, from a merchant family home located in the village of Kurama, just north of Kyoto. Increasingly rare on the world stage especially given its original condition. Fumigated on arrival to New Zealand a decade ago. Minor historical borer holes. A light matching tint and beeswax has been professionally applied to the main surfaces. 74.80 in. x 34.84 in. x 84.25 in.
