Gene Tunney V Jack Dempsey: 1927 programme 'For the World's heavy weight Championship, official souvenir, Gene Tunney Champion, Jack Dempsey Challenger, Soldiers' field, Spt.22, 1927, Chicago, Ill', Fair/Good condition. Rare. [Known as the 'Battle of the long Count', the fight took place at Chicago's soldiers field - billed as the largest stadium in the world - with attendance estimated at 104,000. In the seventh round, Dempsey unleashed a flurry of punches knocking the Tunney into the ropes, where he went down. Dempsey stood over Tunney and ignored the referee's request for him to go to his corner; accordingly the referee delayed his count and it is estimated that Tunney was down for 13-17 seconds instead of the allotted ten. Tunney stood up as the ref counted nine, and then went on to dominate the rest of the fight and retain his title via unaminous decision]
