A Mughal miniature painting, Northern India, late 19th century, courtesan with calligraphy panel verso, gouache, gold and pigment on wasli paper, the standing figure with finely painted details to the features and dress, possibly a portrait of a favourite courtesan though there is no name inscribed on the painting or margins, verso: the text is in Arabic and written in delicate sulus script using white paint on a deep blue ground, the text at the top is a saying by the Prophet Muhammad, followed by praise for the Prophet and his family, the name of the calligrapher is signed but illegible, 7.68 in. x 4.33 in.
