A rare Peter Stichbury Abuja Pottery (Nigeria) coffee pot, tenmoku glaze, the mildly domed lid with fine wavy combed effect, tapered open topped spout. Doubled marked with the potter's and the Abuja Pottery marks, height 7.28 in. C.1958/1959. Note: in 1951 Peter was lecturing in Art at a New Zealand Teacher training College when he won a two-year scholarship from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies to study pottery with Bernard Leach at St. Ives in Cornwall and with Michael Cardew at Abuja Pottery training centre in Northern Nigeria. From his experiences with Michael Cardew in Abuja Peter is recorded as saying 'All I want to be is a potter'. Examples of Peter's work from this period are rarely seen on the market.
