At the time of the MC award in December 1942, Fisher was a Captain with 'D' Battery 3 R.H.A. acting as the Artillery Forward Observer for the Royal Scots Greys (Armoured Corps) in a tank battle. His tank was hit twice, killing two crew members. Fisher managed to pull the driver from the knocked-out tank even though the nearest German tank was within 50 yards. He continued to call in artillery fire which helped to drive off the German tanks.
