War shield, Wahgi Valley area, Western Highlands Province, this large and well used older shield has many battle scars and arrow holes. It is made from a dense hardwood. Trees of this size were long ago used by people who had to go further & further to trade to get decent quality and size wood for their shields. Provenance: Purchased from a mount Hagen man named Yap Kupigal in 1986 seen in the field photo he is the man on the left / Todd Barlin collection. 64.57 in. x 23.62 in.
